Medication for behaviour

I have always been a timers with children but after an asd/adhd diagnosis it was needed. Our son was prescribed Ritalin and we ending up stopping due to the effects. 12 months later trying again but he has been getting violent. He never was before, Should I stop the meds? Will he settle? #lost

Hi, have you tried anything else than ritalin? May be you should investigate other medicine. My daughter is in vyvanse and it works really well. Not saying it would work for your son bit it might be worth asking the doctor for an alternative.

My daughter is on Vyvanse but it definitely did not stop the violent behaviour. Could it be that your son is maturing and communication is becoming more challenging for him? My daughter started becoming quiet violent around the age of 10- she’s starting to hit puberty and with hormones and emotional dysregulation challenges this made for violent behaviour. She is also on Intuniv for anxiety which her paed was hoping would alleviate the violent behaviour but unfortunately it didn’t so we have had to go onto Risperidone (low dose) now which has eased the violent episodes. It could (or may not) be coincidence with the timing of the meds & the violent behaviour. I would ask for a review with your paediatrician for next steps re medication as everyone’s diagnosis/behaviour/medical backgrounds are so different. How old is your son? I’m assuming he’s been diagnosed ADHD- are there any other diagnoses?

The advice I got from my pead re Ritalin is that I would see an automatic change in his processing and it will take a couple of weeks for his body to get used to it so he would be emotional for a week or so. I asked about reactions and if he was to display violent outbursts she told me to stop the medication and we would look into something else. Knowing that part I would personally rebook an appointment with your and discuss other options of medication. And there is no one size fits all with ADHD in regards to the medication route.

As above- definitely ask paed about trialling something different
