Flu Shot

We are getting flu shots this afternoon. Does anyone know if you can use a numbing cream before the vaccine? And is it something you can just buy from the chemist? Thanks, worried how my 3 yo will go as she has a lot of medical trauma!

Hi Carli-we were told once that numbing cream could be used pre vaccine. Emla, or numit is available at chemists usually on shelf so you don't need to ask (we get ours from chemist warehouse as we use it for blood tests!)...my 6 year old absolutely hates needles and too has medical trauma but it's such a quick process we just hold him for the 5 seconds it takes to do and deal with the crying and screaming and make sure we reward afterwards (using a distraction may also help!) Good luck!

How did it go?

Hi, I bought some Elma cream from the chemist. Followed the directions. And then wasn’t certain I’d put on enough, I think I have trauma from her last blood test too! Turns out it wouldn’t have mattered. The nurse completely missed the spot where the cream was when she did the needle 😂😭 My 7 year old daughter doesn’t have a problem with needles, the nurse did her needle then put the Band-Aid in a completely different spot 😂

Something that causes pain for my daughter is the belt they put around their arm first to build up the pressure , we dont get past this stage . Perhaps practice putting pressure on her arm where the belt would be as she should only feel that and not the needle if you use Elma cream .

We haven’t had to attempt another blood test yet, thankfully! Even a grey chair makes her panick now, won’t go anywhere near them. I have had blood tests since though and I’ve taken her so she could hopefully see that I’m fine. She was okay to sit on the other side of the room, but that was it. But you’re right I don’t think she’d like the belt. She screams with a blood pressure cuff too!
