Non verbal communication

I hope you all had a beautiful easter! I was hoping to get some advice re non verbal communication. I had a bit of a light bulb moment this morning, I was reading something about a mum who has issues with her child when it comes to requiring a response and she has started 'thumbs up if you're listening' Talen is verbal and general communication has no barrier but whenever he is asked a question that requires a response he 'ignores' the question. I guess I've never really thought about using other ways to communicate because he is so chatty (🤯🤯). Does anyone have any suggestions for communication for simple yes no questions? Thank you all and have a beautiful day! 🤍🤍

I tend to ask in short two or three word sentences. Or one or two step instruction at a time. Last night my youngest wanted penguin for dinner. After a few frustrating minutes, realised he wanted bacon. So we work on the word pronunciation. There are a lot of word guessing in our house. We get there in the end. We tried using a device, but that failed big time. We sometimes use sign as well.

Does he get anxiety? If my daughter feels the answer is important she will freeze and need extra processing time. She can also talk well about many things, especially those she feels is important. Just yesterday she was so keen to go hand in her resume (to people we knew) but froze as soon as she got there and they asked her ‘is this for a job or work experience?’ And she literally couldn’t say anything :( she had a script in her mind and that question didn’t factor into it, so the script went out the window! We do the sign for ‘time’ when nothing can be said in that moment

I still use some sign language with all my kids, I also do a debrief and a break when situations need extra time in processing. All my kids can verbally communicate within saying that sometimes as humans we don't want to actually speak for an array if reasons.

Does your little one nod their head up and down? I'm not a pecs fan but if only need for a yes no or maybe could you have those handy so they can present the card for the answer?
