How to change my sons view of being Autistic?

Hi, my 12yo son has always struggled to understand himself. He is very stubborn and isn't always open to listening. His mental health is low (getting help) and on his low/bad days he crys and says he hates his Autism. This makes me so sad. I am needing new ideas or suggestions how to help him accept himself. He was diagnosed when he was about 3 years old so it isn't new. After lockdowns and starting yr 7 this year, things are going backwards. I am at a loss. I feel I have failed him in not knowing how to ease his mind.

I can imagine how heartbreaking this must be. Do you have some people close by who could be role models and who are also autistic? Maybe it would help him to talk to someone who has gone through what he has, and come out the other side? 🙂

I got my eldest daughter a copy of this book. She started to struggle with being Autistic once she started high school as she was witnessing staff mistreating Autistic students. It was really helpful for her. The author is an Autistic person, so the language the book is written in was fantastic. https://www.booktopia.com.au/awesome-autistic-go-to-guide--yenn-purkis/book/9781787753167.html?source=pla&gclid=CjwKCAjws8yUBhA1EiwAi_tpEQIjtPlIauALd133vA5NPe8b7x8zROMO6LciuwB4PAvfHsRFW9IJ9xoCCocQAvD_BwE

I think the I CAN Network have online Autistic mentors for teens, if that interests him. Year 7 is such a tough year though. Then add hormones & self conciousness into the mix. Perhaps reach out to the schools well-being team/learning support to review his learning plan. Perhaps he needs a time-out /toilet break card for those bad days. Also helping him focus on his strengths may redirect the negative mindset?

Nikki I’m sorry your dealing with this. Could you use visuals to explain it to your angel? Perhaps the school could help you with that. Or maybe speak to your therapists. Good luck and please keep us posted.
