Why do schools still say special needs!

So day one back at school, kids have come home with notes. Why do teachers continue to put in the question 'Does your child have special needs?' My kids needs are not "special" they are medical needs. My child needing medication is not special as it is apart of his genealogy. Ugh I hate that question, it frustrates me that if educational facilities are still unable to grasp proper concepts. How are our kids meant to be treated with dignity!?

I feel the whole government needs updating with language. Dept of Education definitely 🙄

I am a teacher and I always use the term additional needs rather than special needs for several reasons. As a parent of a child with additional needs, I suppose that I have a little more insight. However, I am also proud to say that most teachers I have been privileged to work with also have a good understanding of how to phrase and provide for students with additional needs. I do feel however, that the government could better fund to help schools and staff better support our students. This area has a long way to go and our government has a lot to answer for in this area.

I'm currently advocating for my kids school to use 'Does your child have any medical needs?' And 'Does your child have any disabilities?' Is that something you can do at the school your teaching at? It gives dignity back to the child and the families. Also there is something that is going to be launched in the near future that is teacher based (no parents allowed) to better support teachers on Inclusive practices in schools. I'm happy to message you the details when it is launched :)

Chanel only thoughts and you probobly have already done them but maybe an email to the principal? Or could you join the p&c to advocate for something like this?
