What is play therapy?

We are looking into starting some play therapy, I know the wait list can be long so I was looking to get some idea of who has used it? What did you think of it? Knox has started to express how he is feeling more clearly but that he feels like he can’t control his emotions. So I was thinking some play therapy might be the way to go to help this come out more.

So l haven’t formally taken Willow to play therapy but l see her OT work with her using the same concept and l replicate it a lot at home. Essentially l mainly incorporate dramatic play with Willow to tune into her emotions. For example playing with a doll house and gently but purposely add in some challenges for her….we navigate the emotions though play. How amazing is it when they begin to start to express how they are feeling!. Willow very much struggles to control her emotions. I’ve recently made some little emotion jars and together we write down times when she has felt a particular way and add it to the jar. Helps her to make a little bit more sense of how and why she reacted a particular way ❤️

They are clear so she can see all her little notes in there and it sort of acts as a reminder for her. Sometimes we go though and look at them together, or if she manages a situation in which often causes distress or anxiety l can show her that before it used to cause ‘this emotion’. Really l think writing it down just helps her process it a bit. Just like we would in a journal l suppose, just gets their little thoughts out there

I'm not sure about this as all of our therapies have been play based but with an OT/Speech/ or psychologist. Interested to see what others suggest!
