Need advice on school options
Hi 👋
I’m in the process of deciding which mainstream school to send my daughter to and would love to hear from mothers of children with additional needs what:
A) questions I should be asking the principal about the school and how they work with children with additional needs.
B) I should be looking for when touring the schools.
Thank you so much!!!
Listen to the language they use, I know some schools tell parents that kids are better suited to "special" schools or units, if that is the attitude of the leader of the school you will find it problematic in the years ahead. If the principal is welcoming and has a can do attitude you will see your child thrive although regardless of the school you will come across staff that aren't so great so for an example my eldest had amazing teachers until year 5, then we had another amazing teacher in year 6. I posted some resources earlier on to help support kids through transitions and to be able to be better prepared for when your child starts I'll add the link here https://conversationsforcollaboration.com/#:~:text=Welcome%20to%20Conversations%20for%20Collaboration,families%2C%20teachers%20and%20ultimately%20students.
When we went and had the initial meeting with Willows school l ensured they knew all of the challenges she faces and what the particular hurdles for school would be. We broke this down together and discussed strategies to put in place for literally everything
I put a post on the school asking parents about their own journeys within the school and got some invaluable advice and tips! 🤍🤍
