Moving countries with a health-complex kiddo

This beauty who has just discovered raw Brussel Sprouts is moving with us to Brisbane in 2mths time from NZ. Parents are a Kiwi/Aussie duo with many international moves under our belts but never since the girls joined us. It's pretty overwhelming. Girls are Aussie citizens which is helpful. She had surgery #16 in December and is due two major and two minor this year on her palate. The first was due in 2 weeks and has just been postponed beyond our move date. Assuming we can't have it done sooner, I've now got to weigh up the pros and cons of delaying our travel (to join working husband/Dad already there) versus arriving in Brisbane with no medical connections and needing oral surgeries and to connect with a paediatrician, an ENT, an audiologist, an ophthalmologist, a cleft surgeon, a deaf advisor and a speech therapist. All before she starts school (if I can figure out how to enrol her!) in Jan. Argh! Any advice on anything I can do in advance of being there to make connections easier? Thanks! #cleftastic #ectodermaldysplasia #eec #iamr

Hello πŸ‘‹ Sounds like a tough decision πŸ€” Maybe you could try reaching out to the children's hospital in Brisbane and asking then if you can book in appointments? Maybe your current paediatrician could forward all your daughters files ect?

I agree with the above. Also, drs are much more accustomed to Telehealth appointments now. Do you have a Medicare card for her yet? Maybe you can start doing appointments now before you leave?

We are not registered with Medicare or Centrelink yet - I assume we can't without a QLD residential address? But it could be worth calling and see if they would allow us to register given the circumstances.

Ah its so hard when there are numerous specialists involved and trying to transfer everything over. Your current Pead should be able to assist with referrals to new specialist. If not, I would book appt with new pead in Brisbane, get referrals and start there. Take your folder with all reports and pass info on. Once you move head to your local area school and begin school enrolment 😊 the school counsellor will assist. Best of luck. One day at a time. πŸ’™πŸ’š
