ADHD and object permanence.

You know that old saying “out of sight, out of mind”? Well, that is quite literally how my brain works. Object permanence is the ability to know that objects continue to exist even though they are no longer seen or heard. When we struggle with object permanence it can be hard to find something that isn’t in plain sight. It can also majorly impact relationships, like forgetting about people who we are often not in contact with. Do you or your kids struggle completing tasks ? Do you/they lose things easily? Is your or your kids room a mess ? Do they absolutely hate when you clean it ? That’s likely because everything is placed where they’ll remember it. It might look like a mess to everyone else, but it’s what my daughter and I like to call “organised chaos”. Some tips to help with object permanence for kids and adults: • choose a spot to place essential/most used items in plain sight but free of other clutter. • set reminders and lots of them with the alert function turned on •use sticky notes, stick them everywhere if you have to 😂 visual reminders are always a winner • set recurring appointments on the same day and time to help with remembering • If you’re not using it or haven’t in a long time, get rid of it, it’s taking up space. •patience and lots of it
