Going back to work after a diagnosis

Today after 10 months of studying and 100 hours of work placement, I was officially offered a job as a disability support worker! I am 39, I haven’t worked since my daughter was born almost 11 years ago. Prior to that I was a retail manager and I’ve spent a lot of years worrying about how I would ever get back into the workforce… one afternoon last year, in a therapy waiting room, I watch a support worker do her thing with a very special young man and it hit me… I should study and become a support worker. So I did, and here we are! The idea of work placement was terrifying but I pushed through and have absolutely loved every single second. I was diagnosed with 3 types of cancer in 2019 and all the effects of my treatments had me believing I would forever be nothing but a broken shell, physically and mentally… to be able to do a job and be offered a position within a company I love has given me a whole new lease on life. Not only life, but also on myself. I did this. No one else. I MADE THIS HAPPEN! Not only that, I am bloody good at it! Today I feel as proud of myself as the day the told me I had beaten my cancer. Today, when I accepted the position, I said yes to a new me, a better me, someone I am so, so proud to be. Moral of this story, other than a bit of bragging lol is that you can do the thing. You can do whatever it is you want to do. Fight those hurdles that you’re faced with, you deserve to feel this proud of yourself and the life you have created ❤️
