Any parents out there dealing with PDA kids?

Hi! Just wondering if there are any parents of PDA kids, or adults who have PDA themselves. I’m so keen to learn more and connect with others who are going through the journey of parenting a PDAer. My son T is almost 5, is totally delightful and affectionate but gets highly anxious and distressed whenever he isn’t in control of situations. Finding insights and strategies that work with PDA is so important so I’m hoping to connect with others who have this on their mind as well 😊

Pathological Demand Avoidance

I’m pretty confident my 18 year old is PDA. I can’t ask or place any demand on him and it’s about keeping the humor and the laughs. My strategy is largely ti say things that are not demands. Eg wow my teeth feel so clean after a brush. It just plants the seed without directly asking him. Also modeling alongside rather than verbally asking him to do something. Eg pack your lunch for school is likely yo be met with no! If you start doing things in kitchen and just talking about food and what you might eat fir lunch that day and pretend to pack he may copy. Just ideas. It is so so hard when they are so non compliant all the time

I am actually finding the strategies hard to comprehend, especially when impacts to surrounding others are high. Explaining choices and the natural consequences of those doesn't seem to make a difference at this point, maybe it takes time but the explanation of bouncing a ball off the shed at 6:15am this morning is likely to make neighbours cranky, complain and potentially leave us without a roof over our head seemed insignificant to his choices. If natural consequences only impacted him I would be totally fine but it gets hard and tricky when they impact all around them.

I learnt a lot from doing a course with Kristy Forbes who is classed as a PDA specialist. She has a website if you google her. Happy to connect- it can be hard.
