NDIS & mental health care plan query
Hi, my son's LAC told me that before we could start using his NDIS funds to cover psychologist therapy sessions we first have to have exhausted the 20 x sessions available for Medicare rebate under the Mental Health Care Plan.
Fair enough.
My question is, once the Medicare rebate has been applied to the psychologists invoice, am I able to claim for outstanding (not already rebated) amount remaining on the invoice under NDIS? (ie submit a NDIS claim for partial invoice amount, so that between Medicare and NDIS, I'm not out of pocket).
Thanks
Interesting. I’m not sure, I would say you could 🤔. We just used funding for our daughters psychologist appointments straight away.
Our LAC told me the same thing however if the need for the psychologist is needed due to the child's disability it becomes the responsibility of NDIS to cover. And it isn't the responsibility of the mental health care plan.
I never used a Medicare health care plan when we started taking my son to psychology. So you don’t have to have exhausted those Medicare rebated sessions. I would be interested to know if you could use both Medicare rebate and at the same time? I’m not sure on that one.
You Definitely CANNOT claim the gap fees if Medicare or Private Health on NDIS. There is then much to interpretation, as many services such as psychology, OT, speech are all claimable under Medicare. We have always claimed the full cost under our NDIS and not used a Mental health care plan since having NDIS funding and I would say many would.
I agree, if you were to pay the gap via an NDIS claim, it would be seen as ‘double-dipping’. However, I have never heard of anyone ever insisting on using up the MHCP before starting to claim using NDIS funds. I would double check with someone else at your LAC (ask for a second opinion or to speak to the team leader) to clarify. I would personally go straight to NDIS as you can claim the whole amount and not be out of pocket. I know I’m late to this thread so you’ve probably already got it sorted!
