Withholding Bowels

Hi has anyone else dealt with a child who refuses to poo? It’s been an ongoing issue for years now, and there is nothing we Havnt tried, even the Dr is at a loss, at first I thought it was more a behaviour now lately I think it’s more a control thing. We are currently doing a reward token system, a token for a poo, you get 10 you get the Xbox for two hours. So R will hold all week then try and get ten tokens on the weekend for the Xbox 😳 We have tried reward systems in the past but they don’t work for long, we’ve had X-rays and ultrasounds to see if there’s a medical issue but there’s nothing. We go thru countless undies, and pull-ups at night, where often he will release in the middle of the night, thank goodness, but not great for sleep! Anyone else out there experience this or have any suggestions?

I'm not sure if it helps but had a similar issue with my son and turned out he had a gastric blockaged caused from psychological trauma years earlier. We took him to a paediatrian and he ended up taking a course of laxative drinks. The process took almost 2 weeks but was very effective alongside therapy.

thanks, but we’ve tried this as well, he has ongoing courses of a laxative drink or medication but he hates it so we have breaks then the withholding gets worse!

Yes. Would literally hold it in for up to a week. And far out when they are full of it their mood as well is 😫. It took atleast 9 months with regular lactulose (actilax) and doing suppositories every 2nd to 3rd day, until it was regular. There is more to it than that. Thats the basic story Feel free to message me for more details. Too much for the comments 💩

I don’t have any advice here, but sending a big hug 🤗 to you. C went through a phase where he would hold on for over a week when he was toilet training. His tummy would be huge! We worked out for him it was a fear of getting hurt when doing a poo. He must’ve been constipated once and it hurt, then he thought it was going to happen all the time. Our problem got fixed when he got Bali belly on the way home from a trip and he had to use the toilet! The only time Bali belly has been positive 😂

My H does this. We have to have him on daily movicol mixed in lemonade or he just doesn't go. He had an xray once and you could see he was literally full of 💩. Nothing medically wrong he just avoids doing them.
