Sleep tips for children with disabilities

Sleep is so important! It can be hard to get sometimes or all the time. It's either because we have trouble switching off or it's our children who have troubles. Would love to find out whats working for you. Medications, supplements or strategies 😴

My husband does "rock" every night. He gives the boys a firm massage and tells them that every part he massages turns to rock and can't move. Takes about two minutes and calms them so much. I also spray the room with all the essential oils! And for my eldest melatonin

he made it up desperate one night 🤣 now they need rock every night to sleep. Lavender is my fav.

The only thing that runs smoothly with our kids, is sleep. They sleep through anything. I on the other hand am on high alert. I find white noise and fresh easy to breathe air from a floor fan by vornado works great. You direct it towards the ceiling to circulate the air. Gong vibrations that are recorded are also a good white noise. Other than that, melatonin or a warm bath with Dr Teal’s epsom salt.

We have used a few things. Diasporal magnesium sachets are good. Available from some pharmacies, chiropractors or online. 1-2 sachets before bed. Tastes like pineapple/citrus flavour. You can get magnesium spray but I find the sachets better for us.

If you don’t mind a bit of woo woo, Howlite is a great stone for sleep. Pop some in your pillowcase, keep it on your bedside table, meditate with it, whatever you like. I have medication every night that puts me to sleep but howlite helps me relax into that sleep.

My husband and I haven't slept in the same bed since my youngest was born. We divide and conquer with our 3 kids because we found getting up at night and sleeping in our kids beds was interrupted sleep in itself. We are working towards all 3 in their own beds and successfully have 1 and sometimes 2 which is epic. Salt lamps are in each room for light and comfort. Kids take medication to help go to sleep. Recently they love to listen to Moshi which is a story telling meditation App. This has been awesome. They are calm and I am calm (because we do it together) and go to sleep easier. I tried magnesium sprat and oils but they didn't like it. For me.... I find meditation listening music that switches off automatically and doing a mental list of gratitude , calms the mind, and blocks my busy brain activity before sleep. Otherwise, I also have a notepad next to my bed to write stuff Down to get out of my mind before sleeping. If desperate.... melatonin is amazing and OK to use. Hope some of this helps 🙏 🙂
