The Kindship App: Free Help Navigating the NDIS, School and Health Systems

‍You are not imagining it. The system is making this harder than it needs to be.The information families need does exist. The problem is where it lives. Some of it is in the NDIS legislation.

Some of it is in the rules that sit underneath the legislation (that are like the law). Some is in the NDIA's operational guidelines, which explain how the Agency says it will apply those rules. Then there's your state education department, Medicare, your early childhood partner, your GP and the provider who "heard somewhere" the NDIS will fund it.

‍

Each one explains its own piece. None of them tells you how the pieces fit together for your child. What that looks like in real life is:

‍

  • Finding out about a support six months after your child could have used it
  • Being told "that's not NDIS, that's health", then "that's not health, that's NDIS"
  • Filling in the wrong form, for the wrong pathway, and starting again
  • Asking a Facebook group at midnight because it's the only place that answers

‍

None of that is a parenting failure. It's a design problem, and it lands on the people with the least spare time: you.

‍

‍

‍What is the Kindship App?

‍The Kindship App is a free e-navigation tool for parents and carers of children with disabilities, developmental delay and neurodivergence. You answer a few questions about your child and your situation, and it shows you only the support pathways that apply to you, with clear steps for each one.

Not the whole NDIS website. Not hundreds of Google search results. Just the options that fit your child, right now.We built it with support of funding from the NDIA through a Peer Support and Capacity Building grant, and launched it publicly on 17 October 2026. You'll find it at www.kindship.app

‍

‍

‍How the Kindship App works

‍The Kindship App works in three steps.

‍

  1. You tell it about your child(ren). A few plain-English questions about your child's age, where you live, what's going on for your family and what you need help with. No essays, no jargon.
  2. ‍It shows you the pathways that fit. The app uses your answers to filter out everything that doesn't apply. Your child's age and your state change which options are relevant, so you only see the ones that are.
  3. ‍You select what you actually want to explore. If you already have a personalised learning plan at school, skip it but if you are at the point of your schooling journey where you are exploring home education due to School Can’t, select that instead. ‍
  4. Each pathway opens into a card. This is where the work gets done.

‍

Every card follows the same layout, so once you've used one, you know how to use them all:

‍

  • Overview: what the support is, who it's for and why it might matter for your child
  • Steps: what to do, in order, and who to talk to at each stage
  • Tools: checklists and resources to help you prepare
  • FAQs: the questions parents ask most, answered plainly

‍

‍

One pilot parent said the step-by-step guide, checklist and FAQ "just took all the anxiety out of it.

If you get stuck, you can book a call with our peer navigator from inside the app. A real person, who is also a parent of a child with a disability, who can help you work out what to do next.

‍

‍

‍

‍Why the answers in the Kindship App aren't written by AI

‍The "easy" route would have been to build this with AI. We tested it, and AI got the answer right 88% of the time. That sounds pretty good until you remember it's your child's support on the line. If around two in ten answers is wrong, which one is it? And how would you know?

‍

The reason AI struggles is the NDIS itself. The legislation, the rules and the operational guidelines don't always line up, and sometimes they flat out contradict each other. Working out which one applies to your child takes context and judgement. That needs a human in the loop.So the Kindship App is rules-based. In plain English, that means:

‍

  • Every piece of information comes from content written and checked by people, not made up by a computer on the spot
  • The same answers always lead to the same options, so we can predict exactly what a family will see
  • We can show the reasoning behind why an option appeared for you

‍

The content is written from lived experience and checked by people who know the system and have walked it themselves. We'd rather the app tell you less and be right than tell you everything and be wrong 12% of the time.

‍

‍

‍What's in the Kindship App right now

‍Right now, the Kindship App covers the pathways families most often get stuck on in the early years.

These include:

‍

‍Changing or reviewing your child's NDIS plan

‍When your child's needs change, you can ask the NDIA for an unscheduled plan reassessment (most families know it as a change of situation). If you disagree with a decision the NDIA has already made, you can ask for a review of that decision (an s100). The card helps you work out which one you need, what evidence matters and how to lodge it. Our blog on how to appeal an NDIS decision goes deeper on reviews.

‍

‍Early intervention

‍Support for young children with developmental delay or disability, including how the early childhood approach works and how to get started, with or without an NDIS plan.

‍

‍GP Chronic Condition Management Plan

‍A Medicare pathway many families have never heard of. Your GP can set up a plan that gives your child up to five Medicare-subsidised allied health sessions a calendar year, so your child can keep working towards their goals with the professionals they need in their life.

‍

‍School supports

‍What supports are available at school, who funds what, and how to start the conversation with your child's school.

‍

‍Inclusive care options

‍Finding childcare, out of school hours care (OSHC) and other care options that include your child. The app also has a digital All About Me page builder, one of Kindship's most popular resources. You fill it in once, then share it with a new educator, therapist or support worker without starting from scratch every time.

‍

‍Who the Kindship App is for

‍Right now, the Kindship App is built for families at the beginning, the first months and years when the system is hardest to make sense of. You've just had a diagnosis, or a "let's keep an eye on it", or your early childhood partner has mentioned the NDIS for the first time.If you've been doing this for ten years and could run an NDIA planning meeting in your sleep, some of it will feel familiar.

We're committed to expanding the content so every family of a child with disability can get something from it, whether you're in your first month or your tenth year.Over the next 12 months, we'll keep building it with families, not for them, including through a family advisory group.

‍

‍What families told us in the pilot

‍Before launch, we ran a small pilot with families. It confirmed the app is doing what it was built to do:

  • 50% had never heard of the support pathways the app showed them
  • 75% planned to take what they learned back to their early childhood partner, school or GP

‍

Is the Kindship App free?

‍Yes. The Kindship App is free for families. It doesn't come out of your child's NDIS plan, and you don't need to be a Kindship plan management member to use it.

‍

‍What I would actually do

‍If you're new to navigating the NDIS, or just over the 11pm google spiral, here's where I'd start.

‍

  1. Set aside 10 minutes and go to www.kindship.app. Answer the questions about your child. You don't need any paperwork in front of you to start.
  2. Start with the pathway that's most urgent. You don't have to work through everything at once. Pick the one keeping you up at night.
  3. Use the checklist before you pick up the phone. Whether it's your early childhood partner, your NDIS contact, the school or your GP, go in knowing what to ask for and what evidence they'll want.
  4. Fill in the All About Me page. Share it with your child's educator, therapist or support worker so you're not retelling your child's whole story every time someone new arrives.
  5. Book the peer navigator if you're stuck. You can book a call from inside the app. Our peer navigator can help you work out what to do next, and has been where you are.
  6. Tell us what's missing. If the app doesn't cover something your family needs, let us know through the app or by contacting the Kindship team. That's how it grows.

‍

FAQs‍

‍My child doesn't have an NDIS plan yet. Can I still use the Kindship App?

‍Yes. Some pathways, like early intervention and the GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, are for families before or outside the NDIS.

‍

‍Do I need to be with Kindship Plan Management to use the app?

‍No. The Kindship App is free for any family. For information on our Plan Management service head HERE.

‍

‍Is the Kindship App an AI chatbot?

‍No. The information is rules-based and written and checked by people. The same answers always lead to the same options.

‍

‍How is this different from googling it?

‍Google gives you everything. The Kindship App shows you only what applies to your child, with the steps in order and who to ask at each one.

‍

‍We've been in the NDIS for years. Is there anything in the Kindship App for us?

‍Some of it, yes. The app is built for the early years right now, and we're expanding the content so families at every stage get something from it.

‍

‍Can I talk to a real person?

‍Yes. You can book a call with our peer navigator from inside the app.

‍

‍

‍Where to from here

‍I'm not going to tell you an app fixes the NDIS. It doesn't. The system is still complicated, still changing, and still asks a lot of parents who already have plenty on their plate.

What the Kindship App can do is make navigating the NDIS and other support systems less of a guessing game. It shows you what's possible for your child, what to do next and who to ask, so you spend less time searching and more time with your child.

Because you were never meant to do this alone. Take a look at www.kindship.app. And if you'd like to talk through where your family is at, our team would love to help. Book a call here.
